Conveyance Gate Rehabilitation

Challenge

The Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District (MMSD) constantly monitors its network for aging infrastructure and equipment in need of rehabilitation or replacement. Timely rehabilitation, when warranted, helps minimize expenses compared to total replacement or reconstruction.

Several years ago, MMSD started a multi-year program to inspect the mechanical gates leading to the deep tunnel, a massive wastewater holding facility beneath the City of Milwaukee.

Solution

Kapur was part of the team that provided inspection and rehabilitation design services for all four phases of conveyance gates projects.

Gate hydraulic accumulators were removed, and electrical components were replaced as needed.

All hydraulic piping was replaced with stainless steel pipes, fittings, and valves. Exposed metals were cleaned, prepared, and treated with protective coatings. Hydraulic accumulators were removed, cleaned, re-coated, and then reinstalled.

Results

Our team performed rehabilitation design and on-site inspections for more than 40 diversion chambers and vaults.
