Challenge
Konkel Park is a former landfill area in the City of Greenfield that is flanked by wetlands and a stream on the west side of the park. For years this was an underused area of the city. When Kapur began on this project, Konkel Park consisted only of a parking lot and three volleyball courts.
Solution
Through intensive collaboration and planning with the City of Greenfield, Kapur developed a design concept to revitalize the park with expanded facilities and footpaths connecting it to the surrounding schools and neighborhoods. This had been a vision of city leaders for years, so when Kapur became involved, there was lots of enthusiasm for the project.
Because the site was formerly a landfill, we first performed environmental testing and remediation. Several areas of the park required cleanup before construction could begin. The site included wetlands, so Kapur designed green infrastructure to manage and treat stormwater and to maintain the natural vibrance and habitat of the park.
The focal point of the renovated park is the new amphitheater: “The AMP.” We designed a system of paths connecting surrounding neighborhoods and schools to the AMP. Additional facility upgrades included softball fields, pavilions, volleyball courts, concessions, playgrounds, restrooms, parking, and lighting.

Results
Kapur helped the City of Greenfield transform this park into a valuable community asset that hosts events almost daily throughout spring, summer, and fall. More residents and students than ever before can access Konkel Park via the new trails. Now, the park has the facilities to host numerous outdoor activities such as the weekly farmers market, a concert series at the AMP, food truck nights, festivals, and softball and volleyball leagues.
