Challenge
Under two master agreements, Kapur was awarded a three-year master contract in 2017 to perform survey and design services for Peoples Gas/North Shore Gas on a task-order basis. We have completed survey and design work on 32 projects in the Chicagoland area to date. The projects we performed are considered non-program installation designs. They are driven by sewer and water upgrades, system improvements, and new service requests. These projects ranged in size from 800 to 7,000 feet and included redesigned mains that were upgraded from 2 to 16 inches in diameter.
Solution
We typically collaborate with Peoples Gas/North Shore Gas engineers to relocate the 4- to 6-inch steel in the roadway as well as redesign the main as two 4-inch plastic mains on the outer edges of both sides of the roadway while remaining within the right-of-way. This simplifies maintenance and limits future road impacts. All projects include comprehensive traffic control plans and details, as well as traffic maintenance during construction.

Results
Delivery is fast-tracked. We complete our full topo survey and design within one month. This includes client feedback and final plans for review. The plan is then sent to the Chicago Office of Underground Construction and the Chicago Department of Transportation for additional review and approval.
