High traffic numbers. High water levels. High expectations met.

In the decades since being built in 1941, the Hoitink Road bridge over the Onion River in Holland, Wisconsin, had seen not just an increase in the number of people utilizing it, but also the amount of water running under it.

With water levels rising, and the threat of flooding becoming more prominent, Kapur conducted the preliminary and final design for its reconstruction, which recommended relocating the bridge in place as a two-span concrete structure with widening to the east and adjusting skew to match the flow of the river.

Field survey, structure survey, hydraulic report, and geotechnical investigation were required, and the design also required HEC-RAS modeling and analysis of a widened Onion River, in addition to the hydraulic analysis of the new bridge.

Upon completion, the changes Kapur proposed minimized the risk of flooding and reduced scour, ensuring a sound facility with reduced maintenance.
