Overcoming a zero-tolerance condition using precise 3D models.

Before a single piece of heavy infrastructure or bridge arch segment could be installed for the I-74 Mississippi River Bridge project, a high-accuracy control and solid foundation of data were needed.

Chosen as the most qualified to do so, Kapur remotely built precise 3D models of the foundation and the arch pieces, devising a method to design the concrete substructure to match the batter of the arches using surface models for layout. Ensuring concrete forms were accurately placed, shortly thereafter, the first half of the project reached a milestone when the keystone of the arch was placed successfully – despite a zero-tolerance condition.

To ensure precise installation with zero tolerance, Kapur set Leica 360 prisms on each arch piece and the existing bridge channel piers, collaborating with the rigging design to ensure the prisms were properly located and survey data would have the highest possible integrity.

For this project, Kapur provided construction survey services, including control, staking, and layout, while also performing the same on the second bridge, completed in late 2021.
