When high stakes result in high achievement.

Considered to be the world’s most connected airport, any work done at Chicago O’Hare International has the power to impact the 76 million passengers it annually serves.

No stranger to high-pressure undertakings, Kapur provided construction survey services – including control, staking, and layout – and collection of data for as-builting in order to complete Runway 9C as part oft he airport’s $6.6 billion modernization program. This included creating conventional survey files for use in Trimble, Leica, and Topcon equipment, as well as working hand in hand with the contractor to create fully customized stringless paving files for the Leica PaveSmart controller.

Kapur also developed new workflows for implementing fire keys in to the PaveSmart file by Leica option for dowel bar insertion, with the new pavement for 100,00 cubic yards of new runway and taxiway able to be placed with Kapur’s files.

In all, Kapur’s layout tasks were locating pavement joints, storm sewer, electric runway lights, taxiway lights, conduit, manholes, water main, and runway sawcuts, and oversight of the project resulted in:

  • demolition and recycling of approximately 180,000 tons of existing pavement
  • 6 miles of electrical duct banks to support future runway/taxiway electrical and communication systems
  • 100,000 cubic yards of new runway and taxiway pavement
  • installation of 5 miles of new drainage pipe
  • service road completion
  • relocation of the existing ground runup enclosure
