How do you take a deteriorating two mile existing right-of-way in a dense urban environment and improve it in a way that alleviates heavy traffic operations but maintains it as an all-important arterial roadway?
As the City of Milwaukee found out with the Teutonia Avenue reconstruction project, you just ask Kapur.
Utilizing an outside-to-inside design approach, Kapur addressed elevation differences by altering the roadway profile and cross slopes to match the commercial buildings located at the back of the sidewalk. This allowed for ADA-compliant curb ramps with detectable warning fields to be developed, as well as bicycle and pedestrian accommodations, bump outs, bike boxes, and Bublr bike locations.
And not wanting the construction of these improvements to impose on those already utilizing the sidewalks, Kapur provided pedestrian detours and sidewalk sequencing plans.
